Signs Your Septic System Needs Attention

  • Drains, tubs, or toilets that are slow or back up
  • Gurgling sounds in the plumbing
  • Sewage odors inside or near the tank and drain field
  • Soggy ground or unusually green grass over the drain field
  • It’s been more than 3 years since your tank was pumped

If any of these sound familiar, don’t wait. Small problems are much cheaper to fix than a failed drain field.

Septic Questions? Start Here.

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

For most households, every 3 to 5 years. Homes with more people, a smaller tank, or a garbage disposal may need it every 2 to 3 years. The Knox County Health Department and the EPA both recommend regular pumping as the best way to extend a system’s life.

Do I need an inspection when buying a house with a septic system?

It’s strongly recommended. A septic inspection can uncover problems with the tank or drain field before you close, when you still have room to negotiate. In Knox County, you can also request the system’s permit records from the Health Department.

Are septic additives worth it?

Generally, no. The Knox County Health Department states that additives do not need to be added to a septic tank. Regular pumping and being careful about what goes down the drain matter far more.
